by its unofficial definition, refers to the textbook approach towards the inception of a corporate video, mostly involving polished animation techniques and a baritone voiceover to package an otherwise unimpressive (and i do stretch the term here) video content, like the shiny, crinkling silver wrapping covering your five-cent candy. all fireworks but no creative substance; because really, if you strip everything down to its bare bones, it's really just a PowerPoint presentation of words and figures, slapped with the cosmetics of moving pictures, pretty animation, and a soothing soundtrack. there is nothing exciting, or forward-looking, or dynamic, or conceptual about it.

so with all this said, i hereby demand to know what in Neptune's sea is a corporate-corporate video concept.

went for a fashion shoot today involving a Finnish model and a Russian photographer, which, even in cosmopolitan Singapore, remains to be an elusive phenomenon. to be fair, the event turned out to be very much more exciting than what i have described, but i can barely keep my eyes open so here's a story for another day.

that is actually the title of this picture, but i'm stealing it for this post because after a day of writing proposals i dun feel like writing the queen's good english. nor do i feel like writing coherently. does it make sense? i dun care.

anyway i meant to find a chinese-new-year-ish picture to put up but nothing's nice on deviantart for me to put here.

this is done by johnsu, who's one of my favourite artists on deviantart because his style is whimsical, his drawing kung-fu is powerful and he likes to add short story descriptions to his pictures. so here's the short description for this picture:

"Liquorish is a girl endowed with large hands capable of firing conservative encouragements at 400 wpm. she also has tiny feet which are sufficient for walking and running and maybe climbing stairs. despite the largeness of her hands, she is not very confident.

Yukiman is a large snow-like man who towers in the atmosphere and wears a tie, because he is serious. also as you can see, he is not very confident.

Doma is a dome with a slot going down the top of his dome. the slot can hold any number of thin objects, like cartridges or toast. his vague, ambiguous stare reflects a certain lack of confidence."

if you notice i credit pictures i take from deviantart because that is polite. internship has been really good; they seem pretty okay with me doing mainly just writing for now. i got bored enough to ask them if they need to take out the trash but they say that's alright too. and the writing is fun; the only problem i have is that sometimes i can't translate all the ideas in my head to the word document properly. it's like the words are too clumsy to wield properly.

maybe this is what a mood board is for. you know, should words fail us.

today, i met a friendly stranger who lives in the same block as me.

in a HDB block as old as mine (that's about 3-decades), situated in a less-than-prime area (apparently being in close proximity to an awesome 24-hour prata house doesn't count), you get, to loosely categorize, two kinds of neighbors: first-hand owners who have lived here almost half their lives, and temporary tenants who change hands faster than you can sneeze, the latter more often than not using their rooms as a furniture storage solution as they make their transition to a (presumably) nicer house somewhere. so when i step into the elevator, chances are i'll either meet a neighbor i've known my whole life, or a complete stranger who has little motivation to make acquaintances with.

oh, on that note, there are some old neighbors who have this permanent scowl etched on their faces, you know, the kind your parents threaten you with when you're small and you threw a tantrum about something you can't remember now, but that's another story altogether.

so anyway, i was walking home today when i realized this earphone-wearng dude was taking the same route as me, munching on Marie biscuits from a plastic bag, and as we stepped into the elevator he took out a biscuit and gave it to me.

alright. so i've been delaying this blog post, and for reasons more compelled by self-imposed tradition than common sensibilities and procrastination. you see, for reasons that are no longer reasons because they cease to make sense to me, i am entrenched with the idea that the first blog post of the year has to stay fairly true to topics of new year resolutions, positivity and general feel-goodness. and i, for one, have yet to find anything good to say.

i read it somewhere that positivism runs in the human genetic code. in the time when our Darwinian ancestors were hunter-gatherers, this optimistic spark played a crucial crux in motivating them to greater efforts the next day after an unsuccessful day of hunting. call it a convenient justification, or Mother Nature's idea of a joke, or anything, and uh i think i am digressing.

anyway, there will be no new year resolutions this year (unless it can guiltlessly incorporate video games, comics, and free expression), nor will there be any reflections about the previous. i've decided that my life is about living, not a series of decade-long business plans to increase efficiency, or a report card to reflect upon past performance, good or bad.

p.s. this is a demotivating poster. i find it more motivating than motivational ones.

because i'm only into the first chapter and already i believe this could be one of the best books i would have read.

entertainment takes it as a given that i cannot affect it other than in brutish, exterior ways: turning it off, leaving the theater, pausing the disc, stuffing in a bookmark, underlining a phrase. but for those television programs, films and novels febrile with self-consciousness, entertainment pretends it is unaware of me, and i allow it to.

playing video games is not quite like this. the surrender is always partial. you get control and are controlled. games are patently aware of you and have a physical dimension unlike other forms of popular entertainment. on top of that, many require a marathon runner's stamina: certain console games can take as many as forty hours to complete, and unlike books, you cannot bring them along for enjoyment during mass-transit dead time. (rarely has wide-ranging familiarity with a medium so transparently privileged the un-and underemployed.) even though you may be granted lunar influence over a game's narrative tides, the fact that there is any narrative at all reminds you that a presiding intelligence exists within the game along with you, and it is this sensation that invites the otherwise unworkable comparisons between games and other forms of narrative art ... a video game whose outcomeless narrative is wholly determined by my actions - as in, say, World of Warcraft, which is less a video game that a digital board game, and which game i very much dislike - would elevate me into a position of accidental authorship i do not covet and render the game itself a chilly collation of behavior trees and algorithms. i want to be told a story - albeit one i happen to be part of and can affect, even if in small ways. if i wanted to tell a story, i would not be playing video games.

a noisy group of video-game critics and theoreticians laments the rise of story in games. games, in one version of this view, are best exemplified as total play, wherein the player is an immaterial demiurge and the only "narrative" is what is anecdotally generated during play. (Tetris would be the best example of this sort of game.) my suspicion is that this lament comes less from frustration with story qua story than it does from the narrative butterfingers on outstanding display in the vast majority of contemporary video games. i share that frustration. i also love being the agent of chaos in the video-game world. what i want from games - a control as certain and seamless as the means by which i am being controlled - may be impossible, and i am back where i began.

i'm having a deja vu right now. a few months back, before the start of the semester, i looked at my final stars planner timetable and took a leap of faith that i'll balance out com427 and com231 just fine. okay. so maybe i didn't just take a look at it. i stared at it for an hour. i remembered because i got hungry after staring at the laptop screen for so long. so the matter disintegrated into a screw-it-i'm-getting-breakfast-it'll-work-out-just-fine.

today, i spent an afternoon staring at the laptop screen again, wondering the question of phase 1 or phase 2. they say to look before you leap, so i'm looking down from the edge. i'm liking what i see, but not the height i'm seeing it from. because while it's great to be doing the things you like and feel for, i'm starting to feel the burn of this semester's lifestyle, and i'm not sure i still have the positivity to keep this up for another half year.

so to the powers that be, if it amuses you, show me a sign. throw me a penny from the heavens, pass me a message through my alphabet soup, or anything. let me know whether i made the right choice, or if i'm better off as a grape farmer in some scenic grapevine and a grinning border collie beside me.

i have the biggest urge to drop everything on my plate, sit down, and grow mushrooms on my head.

although a good chunk of my adolescence was spent in the late '90s, i didn't grow up with britney's music. or, for that matter, i didn't grow up with the regular diet of music most of my peers were exposed to at that time. since radio would remain an unexplored territory to me until very much later, my music influences mostly came from my dad's collection of oldies, and whatever songs my neighbor decided to blast with his powerful stereo system. which wasn't much, since the poor man loved to play the same songs on loop all day.

so anyway, in the heyday of backstreet boys and s club 7, while my classmates held impromptu live performances on tabletop stages with broomstick mike stands, i memorized the lyrics of abba and the carpenters, all of which meant i didn't realize the 'britney/brittany' episode of glee pretty much redid britney's music videos rather faithfully.

anyway, the (post mid-term) plan today was for me to hit the bed by 10pm sharp, but somehow sleep didn't come. which is a little annoying. and a little strange, since the previous nights before i was practically falling asleep in front of the laptop. and since you can only stare at ceilings for so long, might as well get up and do something productive.

strong words, i know, but i forgive myself. it's alright, really, when you can't print out your readings in the school lab 'cause the printer is out of paper. it gets mildly annoying when you reach home later, intending to do the readings from your laptop, only to find out that it's mysteriously been taken down, and thankfully your friend emails it to you, thereby saving your precious behind and your less-precious gpa. then the mind-numbing process as you go through the assignment till 4.24am in the morning. and when it's finally done, edventure doesn't let you log in to submit the assignment.

so screw you, whatever it means, whoever you are, since you can't put a face or name to edventure who seems intent on making even simple things difficult. i have wider vocabularies with better descriptions, but i know who reads this when they're dead bored, so i shall refrain. as pathetic as it is, dear professor, even though you won't be reading this, i have proved myself a pretty alright student, never mind that i skipped your previous tutorial and that you noticed.

this is, by the way, a rant. i think i shall be highly amused when i re-read it again tomorrow, when i am actually sober.

it has no name; like all old furniture in the house have no names. yet as the years go by it has commanded its own seat of power in the living room, like all old furniture do. for 11 years it has sat there, upon its throne of 2 CD players older than itself, like the result of some haphazard city planning, the new built precariously upon the foundations of older structures. for 11 years it sat, churning out all sorts of essays (good and bad), research materials (just copy, paste and print, nevermind what's written on it), lengthy game walkthroughs, an occasional full-size colour picture.

well past its retirement age, my epson stylus colour 400 has recently learnt something new.

i am sorely tempted to go for the 2nd day of the fest tomorrow.

almost didn't make it for the event today, 'cause post-exam period usually demands more sleep and lazing around. but that's what brothers are for. so thank god he dragged me out of bed and to the convention.

since this event is sponsored by bandai, i supposed it's only to be expected that their products are arranged nearest to the entrance.

the dust has finally settled; the ketchup and flour seperated from the clothes (something i'm still considering a miracle!), and my nail colours returned to normal. almost back to the days before the foc.

but the memories shall linger for a while longer.

and perhaps for even longer.

pretty tempting to continue on this rambling and make this emo, but instead i'll make this short. wkwsci foc 2008 has come to a close, but with its end heralds a new beginning which will no doubt change the prejudice of all involved in it, one way or another. friendships were forged, impressions made, hopes raised.

your journey in life shall be the greatest story ever told.
